Meet the Board

Tim Beard

Tim BeardI was born in Sunnyside and lived in the Lower Yakima Valley until I went to college. I graduated from WSU in 1972, and Val and I were married later that year. We honeymooned on our way to the Pastor-Teachers School in southern Oregon. I joined the Marine Corps in 1973 and served as a Naval Flight Officer and Intelligence Officer until I left active duty in October 1982 to attend Seminary. I remained in the Marine Corps Reserve until I was retired as a major in 1996. In 1985, I spent a summer as a missionary intern with Western Indian Ministries in Window Rock, AZ. When the director died that fall, I was asked to be the director of the mission. I served with WIM from 1986 to 1991, but went on loan to the Indian Bible College in 1989. I taught at the Indian Bible College from 1989 until 1998, transferring to United Indian Missions oversight in 1991. In 1998, I moved to Toppenish, WA, to pastor Calvary Baptist Church and continue working with UIM to reach out to Hispanics and Indians in the area. In 2007, Calvary Baptist Church changed its name to Calvary Bible Church. Val and I have six children, ages 33 to 15, and seven grandchildren.

Testimony; I clearly remember the first time I heard and understood the gospel message. I was 13. The speaker gave a compelling message of God’s offer of forgiveness and my need to respond to it. Another eight years passed before I finally placed my trust in Jesus for my salvation. I struggled during those years, not being able to entrust my life to Jesus, thinking that I knew a better way to live. I thought I was smart enough to dabble in the pleasures of this world and not be trapped or suffer the consequences of sin. It didn’t work. I came to a place in my life where I was emotionally and physically miserable because of my lifestyle. At the same time, I became intellectually satisfied with the evidence for a creator that I had been looking for in my science and engineering studies. The implications of the first law of thermodynamics became the foundation of my thinking on creation: the incredible order and balance found within nature logically demanded a creator in a universe when all natural processes lead to disorder. The absence of evidence for the theory of evolution that was so boldly claimed, lead the skeptic in me to reject claims of a natural cause-effect relationship. Life in all its stunning beauty and design arising from non-life? No way! In my misery I rode my bike out in the wheat fields on a beautiful spring day in 1980 and received Jesus as my only hope for this life and for eternity. Twenty-eight years later, Jesus is still my only hope. My need for his grace and forgiveness is just as pertinent today as it was then. I thank God for qualifying me for the privilege of ministering to the Hispanic youth in Yakima; they also need to hear of God’s great love. On that day of salvation, I began a relationship with Jesus, and He began leading me in His ways. I was offered a job and a place to live for the summer. God had placed me next door to a great Bible church where I was introduced to His word and my wife. Through those two relationships God began to change me. I found that I could trust Him because He takes great pleasure in my happiness, has the ability to accomplish his will, and is wise enough to know what is best for me, and you too.

David Hawes

David HawesGod has been very gracious to me. I had the privilege of being raised in a strong Christian home. I accepted Jesus as my savior as a young child. In my teenage years, God began to show me I needed to depend on Him if He was going to use me for His purposes.

God graciously has allowed me to serve in my church as a teacher, youth pastor, and Elder. Even my vocation as a Realtor, has allowed me to serve the Lord and share the Gospel. God has blessed me with a loving wife (Judy) and two children and one granddaughter. I am amazed at what God is doing through N.L.H.M. and am excited to see what the Lord has in store for us in the future.

David Holland

David HollandDavid has worked for the Washington State Department of Ecology for over 20 years. For the last 35 years, David has worked with outreach ministries and served in churches as a pastor, elder, Bible teacher, and on the missions committee.

Testimony: I made a commitment to follow Jesus as a child and through God’s grace I have struggled through many challenges in keeping that commitment. My interest in Hispanic ministry began with a mission trip to Venezuela several years ago. Since that time, I have made several mission trips to Venezuela, Mexico, and Peru. This interest in missions has led me to become involved with local ministry opportunities to reach Hispanics. It has been a privilege to serve on the Board for NLHM.

Gaylord Newby - Secretary

Gaylord NewbyI received the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal Savior in March of 1951, at the age of 22. I was married, had two small daughters and was living in Sunnyside, WA. at that time. The Lord very quickly began to bring about some radical changes in my life. I had never been a regular church attendee, but that changed very suddenly. In the fall of 1953, I enrolled at Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, OR, and graduated from the three year diploma course in May of 1956. During summer vacations and the intervening years, I was employed as a long distance truck driver. That continued after graduation until 1962, at which time I accepted a pastorate in North Central Washington. I continued there until 1965, at which time health issues made it necessary to leave the pastorate. In 1966 I began selling real estate in Yakima, WA, and continued to be involved in real estate sales and brokerage until 1983, at which time I moved more heavily into development and investment.

During the years of my Christian life I have been involved in teaching Sunday School, serving as an elder in our Church, leading Home Bible Study Groups, supporting Missions and missionaries, and doing whatever else the Lord moved me into. At the present time, I am serving as Secretary of the Board of Directors of New Life Hispanic Ministries, Inc. and leading a weekly Home Bible Study Group under the direction of our Church, along with other responsibilities from time to time. I am grateful to the Lord for the multitude of blessings He has bestowed upon me and my family over the years, and for the privilege of serving Him through New Life Hispanic Ministries in these later years of my life.

Robert Suarez - Treasurer

Robert SuarezRobert was born in Monterey Mexico in 1969. His parents were migrant workers in the US. Robert spent part of every year (March - November) in Washington State, and November to March in Mexico until the 10th grade. He grew up in a Christian family and accepted the Lord at a very early age. Robert finished high school in Othello WA and obtained an Accounting degree from Central Washington University. He was married in 1989 to a wonderful Christian woman and they have 3 children. Robert has been an auditor for Washington State for the last 15 years. He has been on two Short Missions trips to Venezuela.

Dan Woodkey - Vice Chairman

Dan Woodkey

The Lord has allowed my wife and family to have many and varied opportunities of ministry. We spent 10 years serving the Lord with Arctic Missions in Canada (now Interact International). The goal of our mission was to plant churches among Native Indians of Canada. We then served as Pastor of Pineview Baptist Church in Grande Cache, Alberta for 2 years before returning to Washington to continue our education. At that time, we became involved in Ahtanum Pioneer Church and I served as elder, adult Sunday School teacher, AWANA Commander, various other committees, Missions Director, and participated on several short term mission trips to Venezuela. It was during our later years at Ahtanum Pioneer Church that the Lord began to move some of the leadership to begin praying about a ministry among Hispanic people in Yakima and the surrounding area. The Lord led me and my wife, as well as others, to serve the Lord in working toward establishing a solid evangelical church among the Hispanic people. The Iglesia Biblica Vida Nueva is the result of prayer and God's working. It has been our privilege to follow the Lord in this ministry. I am serving as an elder and adult Sunday School teacher. God has also led me to become involved in the formation of New Life Hispanic Ministries. It is a real privilege to watch the Lord work in the hearts and lives of people, as He continues to expand NLHM to reach more people for Christ.

Dan has worked as a Missionary, Pastor, Public School Teacher, Construction Supervisor and Property Manager. He graduated with a Bachelor of Theology degree from Multnomah School of the Bible and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Central Washington University.
